8 minute readAt Nacsport, we’ve always been opposed to the software subscription model favoured by the majority of our competitors. But, at the same time, we want to provide the best service possible to our users. And that involves providing as many options as possible.
In this article, I’m going to tell you why we’ve decided to introduce a yearly subscription option but, at the same time, I want to assure you that the Lifetime License model isn’t going anywhere. In fact, it’s the payment option I, personally, prefer…and I want to tell you why.
So, let’s kick off with that…
Imagine this situation...you buy yourself a nice new notebook and pen for storing tasty new recipes. After a year, the notebook is crammed full of great food ideas and you use it every day to plan your daily menus, food shops and budgets.
But then, the notebook manufacturer knocks on your door and you can no longer open the notebook and read your recipes unless you pay them more money for the privilege.
Is that fair? Of course not!
Does it make sense? Not at all!
Would you pay? Well, that’s the big question, isn’t it? Afterall, the contents of the notebook are important to you and you’ve got a big dinner party coming up. So, yes, you probably will pay. You’ve put blood, sweat and tears into compiling this recipe book, and you don’t want all that work to go to waste!
Now, apply the same principle to performance analysis software...
The above analogy is how I’ve always viewed the subscription model for video analysis software.
Yes, we provide the software, but you’re the person who makes it valuable. YOU agonise over the button template, deciding which data you need to collect.
YOU create the dashboards which have the exact info YOU need.
YOU spent hours adjusting your workflows, making minor adjustments, setting things up exactly as you need them.
YOU put the blood, sweat and tears into collecting the data, building databases and presentations overflowing with analytical data and insights.
And who are WE to take that away from you? Who are WE to say that you can’t have access to your work unless you pay us a yearly fee?
And that’s how I’ve always felt about the subscription model…as a form of hijacking, or blackmail. Forcing you to pay for something through the threat of losing all your hard work.
In addition, I feel that the Lifetime License model makes us work harder on your behalf. We want you to pay for our world beating Support and Update Service. This forces us to innovate, creating new tools and products which make this service valuable to you. In the end, everyone wins.
But, I must admit, my feelings on the matter have softened over the years, and I can now see that both Lifetime Licenses and subscriptions can exist peacefully in the same space. In the end, it all comes down to one word…
…CHOICE.
Not every analyst is the same. There are different levels, different needs, and different budgets.
At Nacsport, we’ve already covered the first of these variables with our range of software. From the entry level Basic to our professional Elite product, we feel we’ve got something for everyone.
But it’s the other two variables - needs and budget - we wanted to address by introducing software subscriptions.
Some of you will only need the software on a temporary basis. Maybe you’re a student, for example, who’s doing a one year module on sports analysis. Maybe you’re an independent analyst who is hoping to get a contract with a big club in the next year or so. In these cases, a software subscription makes sense. You want to work with the software, but you don’t need it on a perpetual basis, and you don’t want to shell out for a full software license.
And then there’s money. The initial layout for a full software license and associated hardware can, admittedly, be expensive. It simply makes sense, for many of you, to spread these costs around. A subscription is much more economical in the short term.
But not in the long term…!
And this is one of the reasons we want to give you a CHOICE. Check out the pic below for a quick overview of some of the benefits of both payment models, and have a read of this article, where we expand on the theme.
At the end of the day, we believe that sports video analysis should be for everyone, not just for big clubs and rich athletes. Video analysis can raise standards across the board, from grassroots to the elite, and we want everyone to have the opportunity to use it.
We’ve already done that to a certain degree with our range of products, and now we want to consolidate this with our purchase options, making sports performance analysis affordable and more accessible for all.
But don’t just take my word for it. Here’s my colleague and Nacsport co-founder Frank Gornés giving his point of view on the subscription model.
So, there you have it, our reasons for adding a software subscription option to our range. Although I still prefer the Lifetime License model, I understand the need to give you as many options as possible when it comes to buying Nacsport.
And rest assured, this will not make us complacent when it comes to the development of Nacsport. We’ve got some huge changes to the program coming this year which present a true evolution of the software. I can’t reveal too much at the moment, but there are many things to get excited about in 2022.
If you want more information about subscriptions, please have a read of this article. If you’ve got any other questions about Nacsport in general, reach out to us through our website or get in touch through any of our social media channels.
We look forward to hearing from you!
